Song of the Day 11/8: The 4 Seasons, “Let’s Hang On!”
Yes, the party in power typically loses seats in midterm elections, but history can guide us only so far — in the World Series, teams that won game 3 to take a 2-1 lead had captured the championship more than 60% of the time. That didn’t help the Phillies.
Nobody knows how this election will turn out, but I do know the GOP strategy: Demoralize the Democrats in order to depress the vote. Democrats, understandably, are nervous — they control the White House and both chambers of Congress, while Republicans have nothing to lose. We just have to hang on to what we’ve got.
Like many 4 Seasons songs, this one was co-written by producer Bob Crewe, but without his usual partner, band keyboardist Bob Gaudio. It reached No. 3 on the Hot 100 in 1965, the group’s highest-charting single until 1975’s “December 1963 (Oh, What a Night).”
The song reached the charts again in 1981 (No. 32) when Barry Manilow sped it up a bit and set it to a retro video.
Phillies had too many batters trying to win the game with one swing, with predictable results. It’s fun when it works but the percentages are unfavorable.
Kind of like Dems occasionally winning the White House but whiffing on state level races. Hang on Sloopy.
100% ^ All of that.
