Delaware Liberal

DL Open Thread Tuesday November 29 2022

I’m glad I never published the triumphalist post on Delaware’s weed legalization I was going to put up just before Pete was reinstalled.  It was full of embarrassing stuff like:

When “growing your own” is legalized and cannabis as as regulated as tomatoes, Carney and Schwartzkopf will regret having tanked the restrictive “barely legal” version which would have funneled money to a handful of well connected insiders.

Oh well.   Anyway, on a related note – Ireland:

Ireland joins the cannabis conversation in Europe, introducing a bill to legalize recreational cannabis for personal use.

The Irish Parliament (or Oireachtas) will discuss a bill introduced by the People Before Profit MP (or Teachta Dála, TD) Gino Kenny aiming to legalize adult-use cannabis for personal use.

The bill aims to modify the Misuse of Drug Act entered into effect in 1977 by allowing adults of at least 18 years of age to possess up to 7 grams of cannabis or 2.5 grams of cannabis resin (hashish).

Having given all (his dignity, self-respect, etc) to Trump, what will McCarthy have left to give to placate his MAGA opposition?

McCarthy Is Still Hemorrhaging Speaker Votes Even As He Bends Over Backwards For MAGA

Rep. Ralph Norman (R-SC) announced he would not vote for House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) for speaker next year, joining the small but mighty chorus of MAGA-aligned detractors in his caucus who are refusing to bend the knee – at least not before throwing a minor fit.

Norman told Politico Tuesday he is a “hard” no against the Minority Leader, shutting down previous reports that he might just vote present or not attend the speakership vote at all.

The South Carolina congressman is the fifth Republican in recent days to announce his  opposition to McCarthy’s speakership bid, joining fellow conservative Freedom Caucus members Reps. Andy Biggs (R-AZ), Matt Gaetz (R-FL), Matt Rosendale (R-MT) and Bob Good (R-VA).

They’re setting McCarthy up for a fight for his political life, as the Republican leader will have to continue aggressively campaigning through the new year — when he will need to get 218 votes in House elections to secure his role as speaker. But new names keep getting added to the “no” list.

If you missed the Delaware Liberal’s Cyber Monday sale, don’t worry.  We still have a few trillion NFTs available.  They are listed at $250,000 per but we can let them go for $9.00 each.

Having passed through the denial and anger phases, Republicans in Arizona are entering the bargaining phase of grief.

Democrats could win more seats if Cochise County refuses to certify election

If Cochise County refuses to certify election results in time, it could hand close congressional and statewide offices to Democrats.

Voters − not elected politicians − decide the outcome of elections in this country. But in Cochise County, the board of supervisors is ignoring this bedrock principle of American democracy by threatening to refuse to canvass and certify the results of the 2022 election.

The board’s refusal to do its job would not only be illegal − it could also lead to the complete disenfranchisement of the county’s voters and potentially change the outcome in key races with thin margins.
