Song of the Day 1/11: Thompson Twins, “Lies”

This slice of ’80s electro-Brit cheese is exactly what Rep. George Santos (R-Who Knows?) deserves. The Republican Party in Nassau County, where Santos got elected, called a news conference to demand his resignation. He said he would not. Since damn near everything else the guy has said is a lie it’s hard to believe him, but I have a hunch he’s telling the truth about that.

Thompson Twins, named for a detective duo in the Tintin comics, formed in the late ’70s and consisted of as many as seven people at one point, but they shed their rock rhythm section and re-emerged as a synth-driven trio in 1982. This 1983 single broke them in the US when it reached No. 30 on the Hot 100, and No. 1 on the dance chart. That kicked off a four-year run of success that included the international hit, “Hold Me Now” (No. 3 in the US) and a Live Aid appearance with Madonna. They broke up in the mid-’90s.
