Song of the Day 2/7: Spinal Tap, “Christmas With the Devil”
MAGAt Nation (motto: Nostra braccas semper nodantur, roughly “our knickers are in a perpetual twist”) is raising holy hell about Sam Smith’s performance at the Grammy Awards. Seems the British warbler dressed in a Mephistophelean outfit (basically a top hat with devil horns) and scampered about a flame-lined stage drenched in more red than a Melania Trump Christmas tree. Jesus wept.
Everything about these people is a throwback, innit? They even want to pretend to be shocked by play-acting devil worship, as if this were Victorian England, just as the mainstream press pretends that it’s provocative rather than the cliched high camp that it is.
C’mon, man. Rockers have been accused of worshipping the devil since Elvis, just as jazz fanatics were before them. It’s been around so long that Spinal Tap had their go at it with their winter solstice-themed tribute to Old Scratch. Enjoy it…in hell!
I was offended, but only as a music fan.
I was offended by Derek Smalls wearing that dinosaur tail.
