Song of the Day 4/5: Matthew Sweet, “Girlfriend”
Human-Shar Pei hybrid Rupert Murdoch, age 92, got engaged on St. Patrick’s Day to the woman who would have been his fifth wife. The timing didn’t bring him the luck of the Irish. This week the news broke that the wedding is off. He’s back on the market, gals! You could be his next girlfriend!
“Girlfriend” was the title track to Matthew Sweet’s most critically acclaimed album, released in 1991. The blistering lead guitar was supplied by Robert Quine, Sweet’s frequent collaborator in the early ’90s, best known for his work with the Voidoids and Lou Reed.
Matthew Sweet and his band gave an impressive show at Hammerjacks in Baltimore back in 1995. That can’t be 28 years ago can it?
Good tune, as noted love the guitar.
Little known fact – an undisclosed collaborator and background singer for matthew sweet is scarlett johannson

She’s released a lot of music herself. Did she say why she didn’t want to be credited on his album?
