Song of the Day 4/21: Katrina and the Waves, “Walking on Sunshine”

Filed in Arts and Entertainment by on April 21, 2023

For no better reason than the nice weather, a slice of sunshine pop that’s become a standard since its release in 1985, when it reached No. 9 on the Hot 100. It’s been used in countless ads and soundtracks ever since.

Technically, Katrina and the Waves weren’t a one-hit wonder — they had two other entries in the Top 40 over the years. “That’s the Way” made it to No 16 in 1989.

Though their albums weren’t released in the U.S., the band stayed active in Europe, and in 1997 they won the Eurovision song contest with “Shine a Light.” No. 3 single in the UK, like “Walking on Sunshine,” it was written by Waves guitarist Kimberley Rew.

  1. Bought this album based on the single and a rave review. I hated the album, hated it.

Took it to Jeremiah’s on Philly Pike (they used to exchange used records for a lower price on purchases). They had always taken back every used album I brought them, some of them legit no-hopers..

Not Katrina & The Waves, though. Seems like everybody had bought the album and disliked it as much as I did. Lotsa sellers, no buyers. Don’t know what I ever did with the album. Maybe some sucker bought it at a yard sale.
