Last week’s poll results and this week’s poll
A majority (61%) of DL poll-ees are wrong about hot dogs. They are sandwiches. Onward.
I’m leaving this week’s open for nominations until Wednesday or so, then the rest of the week will be a runoff with the top 3 or 4 battling it out to see…
Who would you like to be Delaware’s next Rep in Congress?
Of course hot dogs are sandwiches. They meet the basic criteria – filling (usually meat) between two pieces of bread. I admit they don’t *feel* like sandwiches. Hamburgers are sandwiches too. And cheesesteaks. But it would be dorky to actually *call* any of these sandwiches. Hamburger sandwich anybody?
I nominate a 25-year-old hot dog for Delaware representative.
Wrong. Hot dogs in and of themselves are NOT sandwiches. Just like a slice of turkey is not a sandwich. A hot dog is only a sandwich when it includes – at a bare minimum – a roll. I actually voted incorrectly on this and was straightened out by my children.
*eyeroll*. Do you say, “I’ll have a hotdog on a roll? ” Do you say “I’ll have peanut Butter and Jelly on bread”. Of course not. In this context and in the real world, the bread is assumed.
The meat is obviously not a sandwich absent the roll.
“Hot dog” and “hamburger” are both a meat and a sandwich and are examples of synechdoche.
Correction: “hamburger” is actually a sandwich; using the term hamburger for just the meat is a back-formation.
Who wouldn’t read a blog that expands their understanding of synecdoche? Thanks Puck.
