Song of the Day 5/22: Jimmy Buffett, “Come Monday”

For the second time in less than a year, Jimmy Buffett has cancelled concerts due to health issues that required immediate attention. Now 76, the country’s second-richest Buffett — his net worth reportedly tops $1 billion — might have to look at permanently docking his Coral Reefer Band.

Most people don’t remember it, but Buffett — the singing one — started out in Nashville in the early ’70s with a sound that was nominally country but fit into the soft rock template of the singer-songwriter movement (Jim Croce was a friend and mentor). This tune, which appeared on his third LP, 1974’s “Living and Dying in 3/4 Time,” was his first Top 40 single, and at No. 30 charted higher than anything in his career except “Margaritaville.” Fittingly, it would sound right at home on a yacht-rock mix.
