Song of the Day 5/26: The Rascals, “A Beautiful Morning”
It is indeed a beautiful morning, but gardens aren’t going to stay beautiful long if we don’t get some rain soon. Don’t worry, not on the holiday weekend — no wet stuff is forecast for a week or more.
This song, released in 1968, was the first to sport the name Rascals instead of Young Rascals, I guess because composer and organist Felix Cavaliere had turned a ripe old 26. The single reached No. 3 on the Hot 100.
What a GREAT song!
I hear a bass but I don’t see a bass player. He or she must be offstage with the horn section. And the piano player.
I’m assuming it was lip-synched. If so, Felix did a great job.
Cavaliere wanted to keep the band at four people, so when they played live he supplied the bass with his foot pedals. They used session players in the studio, most notably Chuck Rainey. The audio is the studio version, they’re lip-synching.
Hammond Organ pedal bass. I’m a piano/synths guy, but real organists can rock the bass pedals.
Great tunes.
Another band with the business savvy to get on the ‘Big Chill’ soundtrack.
