DL Open Thread Monday May 29 2023

Happy Memorial Day.  We overcame our isolation and nativism to fight two good wars in Europe. We got some good movies and songs out of the last one and were clearly the good guys.   Then we pretended to still be the good guys for a while in Korea which was a draw, and VietNam which was an “L”.  Then we said, enough of that and just outspent the USSR in the cold war, and did some “peacekeeping”  and outsourcing for a while, then Dick Cheney and Bush took the wheel and  ooof…that sucked.  Anyway, thank you for your service.   This is a truncated holiday open thread.

I guess we’re supposed to be happy about the Debt Ceiling resolution because the Freedumb Caucus is sad & angry.  That’a about my level of engagement with this so, Hip, hip hooray!  Team Blue wins again!  Team red is a bunch of cucks, or something.

That very deep analysis leaves out that the Freedumb Caucus is always sad & angry no matter the outcome, but whatever.  Disaster avoided.  Also, this…

Let’s Have Work Requirements for the Super Rich and Their Massive Tax Breaks

Current tax rules effectively subsidize investment income of the wealthy that far exceeds the income these individuals earn from work. Time to to put an end to that.

As Congress and the President negotiate on the debt ceiling, one sticking point is the work requirements that GOP leaders want to apply to income assistance programs like Medicaid and SNAP. Instead of focusing on low-income people who are already mostly employed or facing significant barriers to employment, lawmakers who want to encourage labor force participation should revisit existing tax breaks subsidizing wealthy individuals who live off their assets rather than work.

Hey Republicans, PLEASE nominate Trump.  Thanks!

Fearing a 2024 ballot headed by now-indicted Donald Trump will cripple the Republican Party’s hopes to retain the House and win back the Senate, GOP campaign consultants and moderate Republicans are growing increasingly frustrated that they have been unable to come up with one candidate who can bump the former president off of his perch.

According to a report from Politico, conservatives fear a repeat of 2016 when Trump steamrolled his opposition by breaking all the rules of politics and, now with the dark cloud of criminal investigations hanging over him, he appears to be doing it again.

The Politico report notes that what appears to be a massive influx of 2024 GOP presidential nomination contenders, most with little to no chance of being successful, will make it easier for the former president to land his third nomination.

According to Republican Jason Osborne, the New Hampshire House majority leader, “If those people are all still in the race when January comes around, it’s going to be 2016 all over again, and Trump will win the nomination,” before lamenting, “That’s just how it is.”

Since time immemorial the rich have yearned to beat the poor, this latest game with the “work requirement” is just as stupid as the last time they tried it, and will prove of little or no effect. You cannot extract work from the sick, the halt, the lame and those in advance old age (Calling the senate!). This is yet another manifestation of the many hatreds of the Republican base. And yes, all in for Trump for the Republicans in 2024 as the panic has already set in for those who can see what’s coming.

If “work requirement” means the Federal government is required to provide you with a job, I’m all for it.

When I first heard a proposal for a guaranteed income I thought it absurd, with the advent of AI and ever increasing automation I have reconsidered, it may well be the only way to avoid riots, revolution and war going forward.

  3. Yet another headline from today’s News-Journal:

“Looking for Delaware, Maryland fireworks? Here is our list for 4th of July shows”.

Never too early to make your plans, I suppose.
