Song of the Day 7/1: Jackson Browne, “Call It a Loan”

Filed in Arts and Entertainment, National by on July 1, 2023

The Supreme Court hath spoken, and it repeated its mantra: Money talks, everything else walks. Call it American justice: Bankruptcy can wipe out all the loans you can’t repay except the ones you took out when you were in or just out of your teens.

The loan Jackson Browne was singing about was emotional, not financial. Of this cut from his critically derided 1980 album “Hold Out,” he once told Mojo magazine, “This is about not being able to pay up, stealing someone else’s heart and not being able to go on with the theft – not knowing the complete cost, and wanting to call it a loan until you grow enough to pay for it.” He wrote the tune with his longtime sideman David Lindley.

I received an invitation from Mr. Meyer’s campaign to turn out for a parade campaign event. The lengthy invitation didn’t identify him as a Democrat. If he’s ashamed of his party, why would he seek its nomination for Governor? Why do some politicians think it’s good politics to conceal their party from the voters?

Yep, that’s the first thing I look for. You don’t get the parties message across when you don’t identify yourself as a Democrat. On the other hand it’s advantage Republicans as all they have to do is sound racist a bit and then we all know who they are.

It would be a refreshing contrast in a party primary. Remember this:

“I’m Howard Dean, and I’m here to represent the Democratic wing of the Democratic party.”

Also remember Dean lost that primary.

      • Jason330 says:

That was a Paul Wellstone line. Clinton and the DNC then had him killed in a “plane crash”.

Don’t get me started on Dean’s defenestration.
