About this event

Hi friends,

I wanted to invite you to an event on July 24th at 6pm at The Delaware Contemporary (200 S Madison St, Wilmington, DE 19801) where I will be sharing my first official announcement about my plans for the future and also how we can build a movement together here in Delaware.

You have been a key part of my journey to be of service to those in Delaware, so would love to have you there (and anyone else you think would want to come).

Many thanks,

Eugene

You will need to RSVP as space is limited.

2. Branden Fletcher Files For 3rd RD Seat.  While most of what I learned at last week’s candidate get-together must remain confidential for now,  Branden Fletcher has already filed his committee.  I question whether it’s even possible to find a better candidate.  If you volunteered for Shane Darby’s race, he was her campaign manager/field organizer.  Despite a limited timeline, he and Shane almost pulled an incredible upset.  He gave a fantastic presentation last week, he’s running for the right reasons, oh, and I think he’s a genius.  His presentation focused on housing insecurity and renters’ rights.  He is running to fill the RD seat that Sherry Dorsey Walker is vacating to run for Lt. Governor.   For someone so young, his background is impressive.  I love this entry:  “Chronic campaigner”.  I definitely hope to knock some doors for him.

3.  Marty Rendon Is The Real Deal.  While Branden Fletcher would be one of the youngest state reps ever, Marty would be one of the oldest first-timers.  When you look at his district, which is currently held hostage by Speaker Pete, the demographics certainly skew older. And progressive.  Marty is energetic, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable.  He also made an incredible presentation last week.  I scarcely dare to hope that he will be Speaker Pete’s successor.  But he has already built a lot of support in the district.  The sea change would be palpable.  He should be near the top of everybody’s priority list come next year.

4.  Mayor Mike Is ‘Inclined’ To Run For Reelection.  Well, if his only opponent is Velda Jones-Potter, even I’d vote for him.  Her campaign?  She’s Black. She’s A Woman. She’s Unethical.  Will any credible challenger step up, or will Buccini/Pollin continue to run the city? Velda’s more than a little full of herself:

As March 31 is also the culmination of Women’s History Month, I am keenly aware that I stand on the shoulders of phenomenal women who came before me, and that I walk in unison with those who carry the torch today.

True…if all women practiced raiding the public coffers to benefit their ne’er-do-well family members.

5. Great Candidates Emerging From The Woodwork.  In addition to Branden and Marty, we already have Nicki Beard and Tracey Miller as filed candidates for legislative seats, we have Frank Burns running again, and we have three other superb prospective candidates from last week’s get-together, with several others likely to emerge.  Big props to the elected officials who came and helped with the candidate training.  You are the best of the best.

That’s all I’ve got.  Whaddayahear and whaddayathink?

  1. AA says:

How do we know Eugene’s announcement is for congress and not Gov?

  2. Grant Brunner says:

I like Eugene, but I really wish he was running for NCC Exec instead. I am increasingly concerned about that position.

    • You’re not the only one.

Not hearing many flattering remarks about Marcus’ campaign. And, so far, the only alternative is Karen Hartley-Nagle.

Having said that, Eugene’s skill set is broader than that of someone running for NCC Executive.

I wish he was running for Governor, but he has his sights set on Washington.

The good news? Whoever loses the race for Congress will be well-positioned to take on Chris Coons in two years, so there’s that.

    • Jean says:

^^^this. NCC needs someone with integrity who can keep it together. I don’t want a return to the coons/gordon days

  3. Alby says:

What I notice is that nobody is going to challenge LBR. So progressive candidates are fine ‘n’ dandy with letting the far more lucrative office go to a — geez, I can’t even say she’s a centrist. Who the hell can tell what she is?

    • While you make a good point, LBR faced a quality opponent in Bryan Townsend when she first ran for that seat. He ran to her left. And didn’t come particularly close.

She IS more of a brand than anything else, stands for next to nothing, but also isn’t a Coonsian, and doesn’t project to vote like one. Plus I think it’s really difficult to run against a Black female officeholder as a Democrat unless they’re corrupt. Like, say, Velda Jones-Potter.

      • Alby says:

He had no chance because it was two men against one woman.

Most voters are way, way, way less sophisticated than the people who visit this blog think.

        • SussexWatcher says:

Don’t forget Micheal Miller, Scott Walker (yes that one), and Elias Weir!

          • Alby says:

OK, one woman, two men and three weirdos.

            • Calvin Sparks says:

I love Eugene Young and Sarah McBride. Both are great, but I am pulling for Sarah. I think she has the skill set for it. She is brilliant, knows Washington and Delaware, and will give Transgender folks a seat at the table. I really wish Eugene was running for NCC Executive or even Mayor again. I do think Eugene could win though. He will have some of the best grassroots organizers with him, and there already working the City of Wilmington and the City of Dover.

  4. deeder says:

    Young may win….

    1) He’s black in a Dem primary, that is a huge boost
    2) Many block voters still go to church. Yes, thatas a hint a McBride, right, wrong, or indifferent its the cold political reality.
    3) He already has a base in Wilmington

This will be a fascianting primary.

Agree in NCC Exec race. Marcus Henry vs Nagle is a hold your nose election.

    • Jason330 says:

Do I still have time to file for NNC Exec?

    • Alby says:

Can’t find recent numbers, but historically Black turnout lags white turnout in Delaware.

Wilmington has 65,000 people. New Castle County has 570,000.

What’s the line about church about? McBride has to go to church? How do you know she doesn’t?

    • SussexWatcher says:

Help me out, as a downstater. What’s wrong with Marcus Henry?

      • When the alternative is Karen Hartley-Nagle, which would be an utter disaster, I think a lot of people, and a lot of constituencies, have pinned their hopes on Henry.

Many of those same people are discouraged by what they see as a lackluster campaign, even by the standards of lackluster campaigns.

I like him on a personal level, but I haven’t been really following his campaign.

  5. Joe9324 says:

El Somnambulo, I was wondering where do you get all your political information from?

    • Alby says:

Are you new to the world of covering politics? Do you think people just cough up their anonymous sources?

    • Not all of it is sourced, though a lot is. For example, I often check out the Department of Elections site to see who has filed their committees.

I often use the same resource to check out campaign finance information as well.

  6. Jay Simon says:

Hot off the grill: Gordon making calls to reassemble yet another run for County Executive with crime and taxes evidently being his main issues. Evidently, his intense dislike for both candidates is fueling his decision.

    Never say never…

    • Alby says:

I used to think that Gordon without Freebery might work. Then he hired Grimaldi.

      • That reminds me, WEHT Grimaldi?

        • Alby says:

He runs the Elmark Sign Company, “Pennsylvania’s leading manufacturer of custom made signs, vehicle wraps and graphics, and office branding.”

      • Jay Simon says:

He once ran for revenge and he’ll do it again. I don’t know the man personally but he strikes me as aa vapid narcissist. The problem is he has legions of followers, including unions. He never seems to have a problem attracting volunteers and his followers tend to kill for him much like trump. Get ready for four more years.

        • Last time I saw him, he was SERIOUSLY in his cups. At a public event. Just days before his most recent primary loss. Which wasn’t all that recent.

I doubt that he’s aged well in the intervening eight years.

        • Alby says:

I’m not sure of your verb tense. He had legions of followers. I’m not sure how many are still around. People like that often retire to somewhere further south.

        • Nancy Willing says:

Gordon is not in good health. Is not running for anything. Got it?

And frickin slimy Grimaldi’s Helping slimy KHN CE campaign.

But Marcus Henry is the most likely to walk the corporate dev industry line AKA Coonsie-Meyer style BS.

He has my vote tho unless an actual progressive files like Dave Carter. Dave is slightly happier now with the Land Use Department cooperation with his initiatives so he’s not going to have to run.
