Almost none of the old people I know have left their homes gracefully at the end. Even when they clearly could not function, they stubbornly insisted they were fine and refused all help, causing great disruption and worry in the family, and they had every right to refuse. Until some undeniable medical or legal crisis eventually forced them out.
I suppose I am grateful there are laws against just hauling you out of your home because someone says you are too old.
A family member can ask the elderly person’s doctor to evaluate competency, and then you can pursue guardianship or POA. But first you have to get them to agree to go to the doctor to be evaluated, and they have the right to refuse.
I don’t know if anybody in Feinstein’s orbit has insisted she resign, but if they did, and she said No, there’s not too much else anybody can do, except Father Time.
If it goes too far Adult Protective Services will step in and essentially take them to a nursing home, happened with my mom. As for Feinstein it’s a golden opportunity to go for term limits for both houses, dare say it will be squandered like usual.

Not my experience. APS went to my father’s house at my insistence (I won’t get into why, but believe me it was significant), but he still had the ability to answer the door and tell them “no thanks.” They told me there was nothing they could do.

There’s no indication that she even knows where she is. Her staff is to blame. They want to keep their jobs.
World’s greatest democracy my ass.
