Song of the Day 8/23: The Specials, “You’re Wondering Now”
The stories about all those Jan. 6 co-conspirators crying the blues about their legal bills … as someone put it, they signed up for fucking around, not finding out. As always with Trump, the finding out involves being stuck with the invoice.
The Specials popularized this 1964 ska tune by seminal producer Coxsone Dodd (credited as Clement Seymour, his real first and middle names) when they used it to close their eponymous 1979 debut LP.
The original single was by Andy & Joey (Rueben Anderson & Joanne Dennis), who released a dozen or so records in Jamaica in the mid-’60s. Notice that it has a slightly more relaxed rhythm.
After the Specials brought the song back, it was covered by the Skatellites in 1994 and Amy Winehouse in 2007. She sang it as a guest of the Specials two years later at that summer’s V Fest.
Love Ska, would love to see a revival as seriously we could use one.
