Song of the Day 9/7: The Rolling Stones, “Angry”
The grandpas are alright. As if to prove that not all geriatrics are as decrepit as America’s politicians, the Rolling Stones are releasing an album of new material Oct. 20. They announced it yesterday along with the release of a single, “Angry.”
The song is a rehash of familiar Stones tropes, and Mick doesn’t sound all that angry, but the video answers the question, “How do you present a trio of 80-year-old rockers without making them look ridiculous?” By having an actress gyrate in the backseat of a convertible (Sydney Sweeney, who looks like the Tara Reid of her generation) driving down Sunset Boulevard, and some groovy AI computer animation – every billboard they pass comes alive with images and footage of the band’s younger days, deftly chronicling their history without showing their age. (You can read about the production challenges here.)
The video ends with a contemporary shot of the three surviving Stones, but don’t worry, fans, Charlie Watts plays on at least some of the tracks on “Hackney Diamonds.” If you’re wondering whether there’s still interest in this Boomer music, the video racked up 5.5 million views within 24 hours of its release.
I started High School in ’65, The stones were an established top act by then. as I get ready to take my creaky ass to PT yet again in a few minutes this little Fountain of Youth moment made me smile.
4.5 million views were for Sweeney.
I doubt it. If that’s what they wanted they could just watch a Whitesnake video from 1985.
Clever video strategy, and I like the music better than I thought I would.
High praise.
I am about as enthused with hearing new Stones music as I am about a second Biden Administration.
Video is great, song is meh.
Agree. The song might as well have been done by AI too.
‘…might as well’…?
