I Get A Letter From ‘Doctor’ Bethany Hall Long

Filed in Delaware, Featured by on November 22, 2023

Well, actually, my wife did.  But it was addressed to me.  ‘Doctor’ Bethany Hall Long wants to make sure I’ve, uh, had my shots:

Hi Stephen,

I may be running for Governor, but I’m proud to say I’ve been a nurse for my entire career. Over the years I’ve seen people and families in some of their worst moments and had the privilege to care for them. Being a nurse is why I ran for public office in the first place – so I could fight for healthier communities.

It’s also why I wanted to take a second to remind you of something so important this holiday season: getting your updated COVID-19 booster.

During my time in the State House and as the Lieutenant Governor, I’ve had the opportunity to champion investments in making health care more affordable and easier to access. It’s also why the Governor asked me to lead Delaware’s COVID-19 advisory committee in 2020 where I made sure we listened to the experts and let the science guide us.
Working on the ground during the COVID-19 pandemic taught me how strong Delaware really is – and I was especially proud of my health care community and the fellow nurses I watched step up and work long, grueling hours to save as many lives as they could.

It’s because of the hard work of those health care workers and the sacrifices our communities made for each other during the pandemic that I’m asking you to make sure you get your booster this fall. You can find the easiest place to get your shot by clicking here >>

I know an email reminding you to get a vaccine isn’t the most entertaining read, but with holiday travel coming up, getting a booster is one of the best things we can all do to keep our communities safe. As your Governor, that’s going to be my number one job.

Thank you for doing your part and getting boosted,

Dr. Bethany Hall-Long

Yes, it came with a Donate button.  Not linking to that.

OK, I get it. Seems like she has a doctorate.  But she’s not a medical doctor.  Not by any means the most misleading action she’s taken.  But misleading nonetheless. Unnecessarily so. Am I supposed to donate to her b/c she wants me to take my shots?  Already had them.

This seems like a trial balloon to me.  Consider it, along with my arm, punctured.

She is just as entitled to call herself Dr. as Dr. Jill Biden. Although in the medical field. a lot of people with doctoral degrees don’t use the title because it pisses off the physicians they have to work with. In this case it looks like an attempt to mislead low-information voters.

    • Alby says:

You can get a doctorate in nursing, just as you can get a doctorate in education and lots of other things.

I know a guy who won the Nobel Prize in physics. He’s called “Dr.” only on campus.

    • LandlithLou says:

She muscled her way into that east side career development program and took the spotlight, so no surprises there. Really loves playing the role of the white savior in a room full of minorities.

There is an excellent news journal editorial (for once!) that unpacks the problematic resolution passed by Wilm city council vis-a-vis the current Israeli conflict. We all know that there is a latent anti-semitism in Black communities, the result of historic prejudices propagated by evangelical denominations and more recent movements such as the NOI. Will BHL quietly wield her white Christian privilege to further manipulate these low-info populations against Matt Meyer? Time will tell, but she has a track record of unethical behavior that suggests she will

      • Alby says:

If there’s an upside to voicing an opinion on the I/P conflict I’ve yet to hear what it is.

No matter what someone’s opinion is has no bearing on events. Therefore airing one’s opinion is some form of self-advertisement. Pressuring public bodies to voice their equally impotent opinions wastes everyone’s energy to no beneficial end.

In short, nobody cares what anyone else’s opinion is, so all airing it can do is start fights.

Which is, of course, what so many people want.

  2. Doug says:

Boy you guys must really love Matt Meyer

    • Streetmoney says:

Ya I do like Matt Meyer. He actually has some ideas that he can speak coherently about and he doesn’t steal his donors money and operate secret slum properties. I’m not sure why this is a difficult choice for some but you’re either dumb or corrupt or both. These seem to be the main qualifications for bhl enablers now

      • PHL says:

Smart guy. Really great at spin. But he is bought and paid for by the developers. Not sure if BHL has been too. 2023 campaign reports out soon.

        • Streetmoney says:

I wouldnt go to any Bethany hall long finance reports assuming you’re getting the correct information so don’t hurt yourself. And if bought and sold by “the developers” is the big attack. Well. Also when did Stephanie Hansen start disliking crooked politicians taking bribes from politicians? That was her type.

        • Alby says:

Yeah, so what? They’re both bought and paid for, but only one is married to Mr. Shady and has no experience worthy of the job.

You, too, are showing the only reason to vote for her is anti-Meyer sentiment. Not reason enough for me. YMMV, but “bought and paid for by developers” is not far enough outside the ordinary to worry me.

What worries me is that all the “reasonable Republicans” like him. I would like an actual Democrat who isn’t bought and paid for to enter the race.

    • Hey, Doug, she’s also trying to raise money by painting herself as the Patron Saint fighting the scourge of diabetes. This is real and, yes, it looks familiar:

“96,844 adults, or 12% of people in Delaware, have been diagnosed with diabetes – and another 24,000 people in Delaware are living with diabetes and don’t even know it.

For people living with this life-altering disease, diabetes can not only take years off of their lives, but it can also drastically affect the day-to-day health of people in our community.

This World Diabetes Day, I’d like to talk about the importance of addressing such a critical issue.

Tackling, treating, and preventing diabetes doesn’t just happen – it takes key investments into our healthcare system, funding education about risk factors, and making sure our communities have plenty of support for outdoor recreation and activities to keep people moving.

That takes electing leaders who will put people’s health first.”

I was a nurse and a public health advocate long before I was working in elected office – tackling issues like diabetes and the health and wellness of my community was why I ran for office in the first place.

I can promise you: As Delaware’s next Governor, I am going to do everything I can to keep people healthy – can you help me get there by chipping in today?

Building a happier, healthier Delaware is what this campaign is all about. On this World Diabetes Day, please make sure you read up on diabetes, how you can prevent it, and the signs that you need to talk to your healthcare provider by clicking here →

Then, I hope you’ll consider chipping into this campaign so we can build a better future for our state!

      Thanks for everything you do,
      Team Bethany Hall-Long”

Because one button wasn’t enough, there were both a Donate button and a Chip In button.

Can the photo op of BHL delivering a contribution to St. Jude’s be far behind?

Pro-tip to St. Jude’s: Cash only.

      • BTW, I might point out that, when BHL was asked questions at our 7th RD meeting, she pointedly refused to answer whether she would roll back Carney’s attempt to force state retirees onto Medicare Advantage.

Guess she doesn’t give a shit about THOSE Delawareans with diabetes.

    • Alby says:

Thank you, Doug, for clarifying that the only reason to vote for Bethany Hall Long-con is hating Matt Meyer.

    • Al Catraz says:

Yes. I believe he will make a much better governor than a discount knock-off Ruth Minner.

  3. Jason330 says:

I must admit, Doug just cracked me up.

As for me, I am meh about both of our choices. Has any candidate from the Working Families Party of Delaware, (or The Green Party of Delaware, or The Independent Party of Delaware, or The Liberal Party of Delaware, or The Libertarian Party of Delaware, or The Non-Partisan Delaware) announced yet?

Some thoughtful polemic-free commentary about Gaza. Worth reading the whole thing:

Israel’s hardmen like to say they don’t care what the world thinks when it comes to protecting the Jewish homeland. But if Gaza’s ragged millions start to starve or succumb to infectious diseases such as cholera and typhoid this winter it won’t be long before commentators like me start to recall the ghettos of Poland and Ukraine that our great grandparents died in.

Interestingly, it is from within the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) itself that these and other strategic worries are being most acutely felt…

Many of its soldiers have a deep empathy for their Palestinian neighbours. Moreover, their commanders know that there are limits to the usefulness of military action alone…

“The military is a tool, we cannot be the only solution. We hope that in the coming days we will see more from the political and humanitarian sides,” one IDF officer told me on Tuesday.

But are Israel’s politicians up to the job? It is widely acknowledged that several cabinet ministers are no more than racist thugs and the interior minister has a long police charge sheet against his name.

  5. PHL says:

Kent and Sussex, and (some/much?) of NCC, don’t care about BHL’s campaign reports because they just assume ALL politicians are corrupt. The playing field is level, so that is not a deciding factor. So, don’t count her out yet….

    • Alby says:

That’s why I consider it important to get people to care. And don’t be so sure – enough mailers with ugly headlines eventually carry weight with the kind of people who vote in primaries.
