Song of the Day 11/23: Mary Gauthier, “Thanksgiving”
Just in case you’re not feeling all that thankful today, Mary Gauthier’s song about visiting prison on the holiday will remind you that some people have it much worse. Unlike a lot of songs like this, she doesn’t lay on the schmaltz, and the sentiment she shares was hard-won – she spent her 18th birthday in jail.
“Thanksgiving” appeared on her 2007 LP “Between Daylight and Dark,” the follow-up to her breakthrough, 2005’s “Mercy Now.”
That’s just a great song.
Her bio is inspirational, to put it mildly.
Were I still producing concerts….
Mary Gauthier’s music is among my favorite finds of the last five years, ever since I heard her on WVUD. Her Christmas song deserves to be among the top three Christmas songs of all time. It has the best opening line of any Christmas song, ever.
