Song of the Day 1/23: Elle King, “Ex’s and Oh’s”

Singer Elle King, the daughter of former SNL comedian Rob Schneider, had a career-wrecking moment at the Grand Ole Opry last Friday during a birthday tribute for Dolly Parton. She took the stage, in her own words, “hammered,” couldn’t remember most of the words to a Parton song and slurred the ones she did recall, dropped f-bombs and argued with audience members who said they wanted their money back. It was so bad the Opry was moved to issue a public apology.

It’s been 10 years since King had her only solo hit. “Ex’s and Oh’s” reached No. 10 on the Hot 100 in 2014, back when she was considered a rock act. She moved over to country in recent years – she tickled the bottom of the Top 40 in a duet with Miranda Lambert – but I have a feeling she’s going to find it tough sledding with that crowd after disrespecting Dolly.

Here’s what she sounded like in better times.

And here’s what she sounded like last Friday.

Ironically, her duet with Lambert is called “Drunk (And I Don’t Wanna Go Home).”
