Doris Troy was a songwriter and backup singer for Atlantic Records in 1963 when she recorded her own composition in a single 10-minute session as a demo tape. Jerry Wexler decided to release the demo just as it was. The result reached No. 10 on the Hot 100, Troy’s only hit as an artist. Troy’s father was a Pentecostal minister from Barbados, which might explain the mento rhythm.
The song has had dozens of covers, starting with Martha and the Vandellas the same year. The Hollies made it a No. 2 UK hit in 1964, and Linda Ronstadt brought it back to the charts in 1979.
