Song of the Day 4/26: The Beatles, “I’m Only Sleeping”
He’s at it again. Trump reportedly took a “bonafide nap” during his lawyer’s cross-examination of National Enquirer honcho David Pecker this morning. Remember, with people like Trump, every accusation is a confession, which is why he calls Biden “Sleepy Joe.”
John Lennon’s ode to the joys of staying horizontal presaged his later bed-ins for peace. “I’m Only Sleeping,” like all Beatles songs, was rumored to be a drug reference, but Lennon really was known for lolling in repose whenever possible.
The song appeared on “Revolver” in the UK, but in 1966 Capitol was still jiggering the American albums to wedge in singles that didn’t appear on the British LPs, so it wound up on “Yesterday and Today.” George Harrison’s backwards guitar is of historical interest – it’s regarded as the first use of the technique in a pop song.
