Delaware Political Weekly: May 24-30, 2024

1.  D State Rep. Sophie Phillips Gets Primary Challenger in RD 18.  I have no idea why as she’s great.  The challenger is one Lisa Cooke, or Lisa Cooke-Rossi, she writes it both ways on her campaign finance committee filing.  Regardless of name, it’s this person.  An education paraprofessional at unnamed schools and past-President of the Jamestowne Civic Association (2006-2013).  That’s everything I could find out about Lisa Cooke.  Anybody have anything to add?

2.  Cindy Romer Gets R Challenger in RD 25.  One David Hansberger.  Link to his website doesn’t work.  Anyone care to fill in some blanks?

3.  BHL Being Targeted By Florida PAC?? This is interesting.  Something called the Citizens For A New Way In Delaware has filed its committee.   The, um, Delaware address cited by the committee?:

2339 Charleston Park Drive, North Port FL.

Wait, we’re just getting started.  For the first time I can recall, the filing includes ‘Affiliated Candidate Information’.   Here’s what’s listed there:

Bethany Hall-Long for Governor   Democratic Party  Position:  Oppose.

So, this appears to be a PAC established for the sole purpose of challenging BHL.  I’m guessing that this is that TransPerfect whack-job PAC.  Why?  Check out the stated purpose of the PAC:

Citizens for a New Way in Delaware advocates for transparency, diversity, and inclusion in Delaware’s state government and court system.

There are lots of reasons to oppose BHL’s candidacy.  Opposition from TransPerfect is not one of them.

4.  Waynna Dobson Files For Wilmington Council At-Large.  She previously ran for an At-Large seat back in 2016.  She apparently was a ‘Constituent Services Representative’ for US Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester.

5.  Peggy Brooks Files For Wilmington CD 7.  The incumbent is Chris Johnson, who has not yet filed for reelection.  Both are Democrats.

6.  Wherein I Save You The Loss Of Some Brain Cells.  I decided they were too precious for me to share with you an invitation from James Maravelias to hear about Karen Hartley-Nagle’s ‘vision for County government’.  It took place yesterday and, yes, was sponsored by the Delaware Building Trades Council.  I wonder when organized labor in Delaware will wake up and realize that Maravelias is pissing away labor influence.

That’s all I’ve got this week.  What’d I miss, and whaddayathink?

The maravelis KHN event was a complete train wreck and on Facebook for people to view. It’s like your drunk uncle and halfway incoherent grandmother having a discussion with some random union dude. Marcus henry should pay to have it viewed more.

  2. My Spies (I’ve got REALLY GOOD spies) tell me that Lisa Cooke, who just filed as a D to primary Sophie Phillips, switched her registration from R to D before last week’s deadline for changing registration.

Seems like a fool’s errand, but she wouldn’t be the first fool to go on such a quixotic journey.

Yes, I checked, it is true. A very sudden conversion.

    • Donna says:

I think you should do a little more fact checking, she actually seems like a quality candidate with a lot going for her.

      • You mean she didn’t change her registration? It was checked, and she did.

Oh, she’s not beating Sophie Phillips in that district, so just what is your point?

BTW, we’ve done our homework. If you have more to add about Lisa Cooke, please do so.

Joe Edelen of the State News:

    https://baytobaynews.com/stories/sen-sarah-mcbride-sets-delaware-fundraising-record-for-candidate-seeking-open-congressional-seat,136808

“Sarah McBride has raised more than $2.14 million for her campaign, setting a record for the most money raised by any candidate for an open congressional seat in Delaware history.”

    • Since she won’t need even a fraction of the money she’s raised, it will be interesting to see whether she contributes to local candidates and to national candidates.

I support Sarah and will vote for her. But I’ve become immune to these press releases touting record-breaking fundraising. Use the money to do more than just to build your margin of victory.

Here’s a link to a letter that I sent to all 62 legislators and various media outlets. It was published today in the Bay to Bay/Delaware State News
