    1. If his wife had been willing to stay in Wilmington, he would be mayor next year. Of course, maybe that’s why his wife wanted to move to the burbs.
    2. Demonstrates that a Carney endorsement is worth a little less than a 16-ounce coffee at Wawa.
    3. Talented individual with an incredibly poor sense of timing.

    • Amen to all three.

Unsolicited advice for Eugene: Run, don’t walk, away from the Delaware Way dry rot that is John Carney.

Speaking of whom, well, John, just what do you have to show for that endorsement? You basically emphasized that progressives, white or otherwise, need to look elsewhere for a mayor. Lots of progressives, white or otherwise, in Wilmington. Lots of ’em support Sarah McBride. Ain’t enough Notre Dame fans at the Stapler Club to get you elected to ANYthing.

    • The Momo says:

first, let’s drop the idea of blaming a wife. We are better than that, surely.
Secondly, if he had stayed but Carney was running, surely you don’t think he would have run against him?

  2. Bane says:

    1. Please don’t blame his wife for moving out of Wilmington. Those are family choices.

    2. Not sure if there was an expectation that a John Carney endorsement would make up for millions of dollars.

    3. Won’t argue with this.

And for El. Two points… respectfully

    1. Not sure that Sarah is a true departure from the Delaware Way. The person backed by the state and national party, breaking fundraising records? Not saying she isn’t a good person or capable, but this is a Delaware Way coronation if I’ve ever seen one.

    2. Is your opinion that an endorsement of Eugene over Sarah would hurt Carney while running for Mayor of Wilmington? That doesn’t make much sense. Especially if you think Eugene is popular enough in Wilmington to have been the next Mayor. I’m not following that logic. Or the logic that a Potter would be a plausible alternative for city progressives because he endorsed Eugene.

    • Carneysucks says:

The only signs I see for carney are in Sarah’s district. And he decided to be the little baby he is and endorse Eugene. Less for Eugene and more because he doesn’t like Sarah. Im a Sarah supporter and I’m not forgetting that. And yes I’m voting for Velda. For a bunch of reasons but all of them leading to my conclusion that John carney is a dishonest and immature loser who wouldn’t know leadership if it were an eagles defensive lineman. He’s sucked as governor and appears to be getting more and more unethical. And just look at the people around him. No thank you. Go retire. Vote Velda.

      • Beach Karen says:

Carney did major in football at Dartmouth, Carneysucks. I’m sure he would at least maybe recognize leadership if it were an Eagles defensive lineman.

Sheesh. Give the man a little credit.

        • Delawarelefty says:

Eight years as Governor and extremely little to show for it. The man deserves no credit…a total missed opportunity to lead.

    • Look at the legislation she pushed for and sponsored. That is a total departure from the incrementalism of the Delaware Way.

I think Carney’s endorsement of Eugene was a crass way to give him some rub with Black voters. I don’t think it did, but it pissed off progressives who like Sarah and most likely live in her district.

Also, his enmity for Sarah, and her lack of respect for him, is well-known in the City and in Dover.

This election is gonna be a ‘Who do you dislike the least’ election. I think Carney’s endorsement made his election less likely.

    • Anon says:

I want to strongly push back on the suggestion that Sarah’s success in this election is a “Delaware Way coronation.” That implies that she was selected from on high and sat back and a congressional seat is being just handed to her.

I don’t work for her campaign, but from the outside looking at her social media and seeing her at events it appears Sarah has been all over the state at every event possible, she’s raised a record-breaking amount of money and I don’t see any evidence that the money was just THROWN at her while she sat back. She worked incredible hard for her campaign to be successful and EARNED people’s support, and did so while being a member of one of the most marginalized and politically attacked communities in this country.

She didn’t have the support of any member of the congressional delegation, of the Governor, or of the Lt. Governor. She wasn’t endorsed by the party.
She and her team did this themselves.

I don’t think Eugene was the Delaware Way candidate either, BUT having the endorsement of the sitting Governor…the case for him to be the establishment pick is MUCH stronger.

It happens a lot that the contributions and efforts of women are devalued and their success is chalked up to more powerful people (usually men) boosting them. Like I said, I don’t work for her campaign, but from interacting with her and hearing about her operation, I think she worked INCREDIBLY hard for her success and has run a very smart campaign.

Let’s not diminish her by implying all of this was placed upon her head like a crown. She fought for it and deserves credit.

      • Comment of the day.

      • Jason says:

She could have run for the Senate but picked this cake walk.

        Thats at least Delawareway adjacent.

        • Shutup says:

That’s one of the dumber assessments you’ve ever made Jason. And you say dumb shit all of the time.

Sure. Yes. She could have run against Joe Biden and she didn’t. What a coward.

This is why people hate the left. Truly.

          • Jason says:

            You’re welcome.

          • Alby says:

“She could have run against Joe Biden and she didn’t. What a coward.”

No, she could have run against Lisa Blunt Rochester, an empty suit who guarantees the continuation of the Delaware Way. Try to keep up.

            People hate centrists, too.

            • Besides, she can run against Chris Coons in two years.

Maybe Eugene Young can run for US Rep. then.

Don’t know if she will, but we’d have a significant congressional upgrade. Only four years in the making.

That’s my dream. Don’t dash it.

            • puck says:

“Lisa Blunt Rochester, an empty suit who guarantees the continuation of the Delaware Way.”

Empty suit, maybe. But I’m actually warming up to LBR.

Not every Democrat needs to be a progressive superstar. She is a reliable Democratic vote, and I never see her with Republican talking points on cable news. I can’t imagine her being the holdout on a key vote for the Democratic agenda, or scheming in committee to dilute Democratic bills.

Her fundraising emails are fulsome, but that is true for just about every Democrat.

I can’t think of anything offensive she has done, votes or rhetoric. What’s not to like? (maybe I’ll get an earful here).

      • Kathy says:

Absolutely She has worked incredibly hard Nothing was handed to her Comments diminishing her ability, intellect, determination, integrity only show ignorance on the part of the writer/speaker. But of course everyone is entitled to their opinion

  3. Anon says:

Was there any recent polling data? The fundraising gap was wide… but how do you even spend $2M campaigning in Delaware? Seems odd to drop out unless there was a wide polling gap…

    • Don’t know if Eugene conducted polling, pretty sure Sarah did.

My guess is that there was likely a significant gap between the two. And only Sarah would have had the funding to do TV in the Philly media market.

Eugene just ran up against a juggernaut. He will live to fight another day. And I’ll likely support him.
