Song of the Day 6/20: The Power Station, “Some Like It Hot”
This one’s for commenter Jarvis, who thinks people need to turn off the air conditioning because it’s not that hot out there.
The Power Station, a super group formed by Duran Duran bassist John Taylor and guitarist Andy Taylor during the band’s hiatus in 1984, debuted with this single in 1985. It was a hit on both sides of the Atlantic – No. 6 in the U.S., No. 12 in Britain – but its success doomed the band. Singer Robert Palmer, whose career stretched back to the ’60s and covered a wide range of styles, used the exposure to relaunch his solo career, abandoning the group mid-tour.
The video, a heavy-rotation track on MTV in its day, features Caroline Cossey, who modeled under the name Tula until a British tabloid outed her as transgender several years earlier. She later became the first trans woman to pose for Playboy.
I forgot about this one! I remember this from high school. Queuing it up to cut grass this after (with a push mower, not some soft ride-on).
