The Power Station, a super group formed by Duran Duran bassist John Taylor and guitarist Andy Taylor during the band’s hiatus in 1984, debuted with this single in 1985. It was a hit on both sides of the Atlantic – No. 6 in the U.S., No. 12 in Britain – but its success doomed the band. Singer Robert Palmer, whose career stretched back to the ’60s and covered a wide range of styles, used the exposure to relaunch his solo career, abandoning the group mid-tour.
The video, a heavy-rotation track on MTV in its day, features Caroline Cossey, who modeled under the name Tula until a British tabloid outed her as transgender several years earlier. She later became the first trans woman to pose for Playboy.
