General Assembly Post-Game Wrap-Up/Pre-Game Show: Thursday, June 27, 2024
The Big Story: General Assembly Hands John Carney His Lovely Parting Gift.
While I don’t know if any senators will vote against the veto override of HB 282, I know that the veto will be overridden. Particulars of the bill aside, this underlines one unassailable fact: The General Assembly as a whole has dismissed John Carney as utterly irrelevant. In fact, if the General Assembly’s reaction could be summed up in one collective physical gesture, it would be the eye-roll. Or the shrug. If the citizens of Wilmington were looking for rudderless leadership, they could do no better than Carney. He defines the term.
Prediction: BHL will not be on the podium during the veto override. Gee, where IS she, anyway?
Here is yesterday’s Session Activity Report.
You’ll note that Gov. Carney allowed HB 281 to become law without his signature. No doubt b/c he figured that one veto override is better than two.
‘Curious’ also made the excellent point that Anthony Albence, who has buried any information on BHL’s alleged misdeeds, was unanimously approved by the Senate as Delaware’s Elections head. No questions were asked on the record. Call it what it is: Dereliction of duty due to deference.
The Bond Bill is the first item on today’s House Agenda. Don’t know why Mike ‘Skittles’ Ramone was absent yesterday, but I’m guessing that his absence is why the bill wasn’t run. I don’t look for ‘Skittles’ to scuttle this year. Which reminds me, the Joint Finance Committee will mark up the Grants-In-Aid bill today. Look for beaucoups bucks to be showered on the do-nothing agencies ‘run’ by Val Longhurst and Nicole Poore. I know I will.
48 bills are on today’s Senate Agendas (includes Consent Agendas). Only one is a Senate bill, a bill that was returned to the Senate with a House amendment. (Memo to self: Be sure to listen promptly at 2 so that I don’t miss the veto override.)
After today, only one partial day left. Almost certain to be anti-climactic. Featuring a farewell to *gag* Mike Ramone. Nude pool party to follow?
Unless there’s an ongoing Skittles shortage.
She’s baaaaack
Sums up my perspective:

She said at the beginning of session she had been at the DGA conference earlier in the week, so she clearly wasn’t in hiding. Also betting that that was planned well in advance and Senate leaders knew she’d be missing session before they ever had even taken up HB 140 the first time last week.
I know, El Som is gonna give me grief about defending BHL, but I’m just stating facts and passing no judgment. Everyone here assumed she ducked out, and that clearly wasn’t the case.
Is this mike on?
It was the last week of session. She had a job to do. She didn’t do it.
You don’t state facts–you run interference.
She has a choice the last week of session: galavant with wealthy people and corporations at a governors conference or show up to do her job. She’s a coward and ran away from her obligations
Not to mention, she’s not a governor.
She was politicking, not doing her job.
Amirite, BillDM?
Yes, when it comes to attending conferences, there’s nobody better.
HB 70, which repeals the death penalty in Delaware, passes the senate by a 14-7 vote. Darius Brown joins all 6 Republicans in voting no. Off it goes to the governor.
Keep hearing about the board of pardons. How many pardons has carney made?
Well, BHL heads the Board of Pardons as Lt. Gov.
I don’t know the answer to your question.
Of course, Carney chaired the Board of Pardons when he was Lt. Gov. under Gov. Minner.
The Senate is doing the veto override!
21 YES!
John, you can now take your talents to the City of Wilmington, where you can look to screw their municipal workers.
I love it. Wonder who Carney will get to sue the state over this override and his manufactured ERISA concerns. He wants to be right so bad.
He could (have) always support(ed) the restoration of some elements of a progressive income tax.
But he didn’t.
