Song of the Day 6/28: Kinky Friedman, “They Ain’t Makin’ Jews Like Jesus Anymore”

They ain’t makin’ Jews like Kinky Friedman anymore, either. In the ’70s he was the singing-songwriting leader of the satirical Texas Jewboys, a Western swing forerunner of raucous acts like Mojo Nixon. After the band broke up at the end of the decade he became an author of offbeat detective novels and, in 2006, an independent candidate for governor of Texas. He came in fourth, with a fairly impressive 12.4% of the vote. He kept making music through all of it, and has an album scheduled for release later this year.
