For the purposes of today’s Open Thread, I’m gonna assume that Joe will eventually realize he has no choice but to end his candidacy, so I will discuss it no further today.

Breaking From The News-Journal!!  Seriously?:

University of Delaware researchers discovered a kissing bug found in New Castle County in July 2023 was infected with a parasite that causes a sometimes lethal disease.

When “kissing” bugs give you a smooch (actually a blood-sucking bite that people sometimes don’t even feel), their buss can mean much more than some summer lovin’.

Despite the cute name, the bug that often bites people around their mouths is anything but lovable.

Of course there’s a place for a story like this.  But it’s been the featured story on the Delaware Online site for quite some time.  The reporters have the holiday weekend off?  There’s an equally meaningful story on the ‘World’s Largest Bounce House’.  If I didn’t post here, I’d cancel my subscription.

Gaza Ceasefire Possible?:

Hopes for a ceasefire in Gaza have risen further after reports that Hamas has given its initial approval of a new US-backed proposal for a phased deal.

Egyptian officials and representatives of the militant Islamist organisation confirmed Hamas had dropped a key demand that Israel commits to a definitive end to the war before any pause in hostilities, Reuters and the Associated Press reported.

Efforts to secure a ceasefire and hostage release in Gaza have intensified over recent days, with active shuttle diplomacy among Washington, Israel and Qatar, which is leading mediation efforts from Doha, where the exiled Hamas leadership is based.

Good Start For Starmer?:

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has said he will not continue with the previous Conservative government’s policy to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda, in a move welcomed by rights advocates as long overdue.

“The Rwanda scheme was dead and buried before it started. It’s never been a deterrent,” Starmer told his first news conference on Saturday, after his Labour Party won a landslide in the general election.

Sonya Sceats, chief executive of the group Freedom from Torture, which helps people seeking refuge in the UK, welcomed Starmer’s announcement.

“This is a tremendous victory for campaigners, for refugees, for lawyers, for hundreds and thousands of people across this country who joined the fight against the terribly cruel cash-for-human scheme,” she told Al Jazeera on Saturday.

Undoing inhumane shit is always a good way to start your administration.

Fate Of Prince’s Estate In Hands Of Delaware Court.  Wonder what TransPerfect thinks about this:

A Delaware judge has refused to dismiss a lawsuit filed by former business advisers to the late pop music icon Prince against two of his siblings and other heirs in a dispute over his estate.

The judge on Friday also agreed with plaintiffs L. Londell McMillan and Charles Spicer Jr. that an agreement purporting to replacing them as managers of a limited liability company established by three siblings was invalid.

Prince died of an accidental fentanyl overdose in 2016. He had no will, and his six siblings inherited equal interests in the estate.

Three of them assigned their combined 50% interest to Prince Legacy LLC. They also granted McMillan and Spicer each a 10% interest in Prince Legacy, along with broad and exclusive management authority.

One sister, Sharon Nelson, later regretted the decision and led an effort to remove McMillan and Spicer as managing members by amending the LLC agreement.

Chancellor Kathaleen St. Jude McCormick ruled that the terms of the initial LLC agreement are unambiguous and that they prohibit the defendants’ attempts to amend it. She said the agreement remains in effect and McMillan and Spicer remain as managing members.

“As a matter of contract law, this is the only reasonable interpretation,” the judge wrote.

Won’t find a story like this at Delaware Online.

I’m surprised you haven’t written about what’s been going on in Christina with their board and Superintendent. Their board President treats women like crap. And his biggest supporter? Margie Lopez Waite, the one running against Eric Morrison.

It would be great if someone would investigate the hiring of the new Brandywine Superintendent as well. Seems like lots of inside promotions and other deals were cut there too.

  2. Because I am admittedly not up on the ins and outs of what’s going on with the Christina School Board.

You are, and I’m glad you posted this.

Those two Prince relatives are grade-A assholes. They’re the ones who wouldn’t allow the Sinéad O’Connor documentary to use her cover of “Nothing Compares 2 U,” then slagged her when they were asked about it.

  4. Kevin–your post reminds me–the main reason why we try to be an interactive blog is because we have lots of readers and posters with far greater knowledge on certain topics than we do. You’re a great example of that.

So, keep posting on education issues and, if you’d ever like to do a guest post, you have but to ask.

Let’s not give Starmer too much credit. The Rwanda scheme was never going to survive a challenge in court, and the whole catastrophe around it was arguably one of the reasons that Rishi called the election sooner than he had to.

To be very clear: Starmer and his “””moderate””” wing of Labour ultimately want to reduce the number of immigrants in the UK, but they’re just not very clear about how they want to execute their evil plan.

The Starmer-led Labour Party aren’t the Tories, and that’s about the full list of their positive traits.

Also in the dead tree edition of the Sunday NJ: a story on how to watch the Stephanopolos interview with Biden. Whoever is putting together the paper apparently doesn’t look at a calendar.
