Political party conventions used to deserve media attention. Reporters covered them because the party’s nominee wasn’t pre-ordained. That changed when primaries replaced caucuses and smoke-filled rooms. With the nominee already decided, conventions became PR events, but they still get flood-the-zone coverage, just like the Super Bowl. And just like all the words wasted in the run-up to that game, none of it is worth your time.

Trump’s choice of fake hillbilly J.D. Vance as his running mate displeased some MAGAts because there was a time when Vance didn’t kiss Trump’s ass. I guess that makes him a moderate by GOP standards.

Nebraska has joined a growing list of states where Pornhub has gone dark over laws aimed at protecting minors from its evils. One look at the incel-riddled GOP would tell you that even if you agree with the premise, it’s too little too late.

Connoisseurs of terrible renditions of the national anthem got a thrill last night at major league baseball’s Home Run Derby. Country singer Ingrid Andress made the always-dicey decision to try it a cappella, and the result drew comparisons to the current title-holder, Fergie’s 2018 performance at the NBA all-star game. She was about halfway through when I decided autotune is a gift to humankind.

The floor’s yours.

  1. I’ve come to sorta appreciate Autotune. No, not in the sense of turning someone who is out of tune into someone with robotic perfect pitch. But more from some of the creative effects certain artists have imbued it with.

BHL is holding a vote with the Behavioral Health Consortium at 10am to approve $2 million in additional grant funding from the opioid lawsuit settlement fund.

The AG, who has called for a freeze on funding because of concerns about fraud & abuse, should be there as well.

The zoom link they posted on the meeting page doesn’t work. I guess they don’t want people watching. Thankfully, the link that’s posted on the meeting agenda works:

I notice they updated the link after you posted that. I also noticed they uploaded the meeting minutes to the other link immediately after someone noticed it was missing.

Say what you will about this blog – it looks like the commenters are helping Susan Holloway and Bethany’s staff actually do their job.

Everyone wave hi to the lobsters in the boiling water.

I’ve been pretty good at dodging all mass media news lately. I trust you guys to let me know if something I should know about happens. In the meantime, The History of Rome podcast is a godsend.

    The shooter’s high school counselor:

” I say evil is in the world, and that’s what I believe happened with Thomas. He snapped. I believe that the devil and the evil really invaded his brain and that made him do what he did.”

(Fortunately, the article says he is a “former” counselor)

Brings to mind another quote, this one from Barack Obama about Pennsyltucky (and he got a lot of crap for it at the time):

…it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy toward people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.

    • Alby says:

      Shorter Obama: Fuck, they’re dumb.

I mean, I feel sorry for them, but their big mistake comes directly from their religion: The world, contrary to what bullshitters in collars tell them, wasn’t make for humans in general, or them in particular.
