Song of the Day 8/7: Warren Zevon, “I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead”

Filed in National by on August 7, 2024

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz might present as an old man, but he’s only 60, and a whole lot cooler than he looks. He proved it when the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announced its class of 2023. Walz sent out a tweet: “As Governor of Minnesota I cannot believe Warren Zevon was not inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.” It wasn’t a one-off, either. During his rally yesterday he assured the crowd he would work tirelessly for the three-month campaign, telling them, “I’ll sleep when I’m dead.”

That song appeared on Zevon’s self-titled major label debut LP, and it seemed to foreshadow the rest of the hard-living songwriter’s career. I’m not sure what his fandom says about Walz, but I think it hints at a more complex personality than his genial demeanor would lead you to believe.

It was the “as Governor of Minnesota” that makes it art.
