Song of the Day 10/24: Blind Melon, “No Rain”
Move over, Dry January. Philadelphia and the surrounding region are experiencing a dry October – there has been no measurable rainfall this month, and there isn’t expected to be any through Election Day.
Blind Melon was a one-hit wonder in large part because their lead singer, Shannon Hoon, died of a drug overdose in 1995. That was two years after this track hit No. 1 on the Billboard’s Mainstream Rock and Alternative Airplay charts, which translated to No. 20 on the Hot 100. It’s about as upbeat a song as you can find about depression. Bassist Chad Smith wrote it about an ex-girlfriend who was so depressed she’d only get out of bed when there was no sun.
The song remains in heavy rotation on rock radio, but when it was released it was its video, featuring the Bee Girl, that keyed its popularity. Heather DeLoach went on to have an adult acting career, but she’s still known mainly for her role as the Bee Girl.
