Song of the Day 3/6: Gary Numan, “Cars”

As Dotard Donnie flaps about like his hair in a breeze, I keep seeing “explanations” for his erratic behavior, apparently from people unfamiliar with William of Ockham. “Oh, he’s trying to make the stock market fluctuate wildly so insiders can sell on the highs and buy on the dips.” “Oh, he’s taking revenge on (fill in the blank).”

Um, no, or at least, not entirely. The simplest explanation warrants more attention: What little brain he ever had has turned to pudding. That’s why nobody can figure out what he wants from Canada, and why he keeps flip-flopping about tariffs on the country. His latest flip, or flop, depending on the hour, is that his tariffs no longer apply to cars.

Gary Numan had a long string of Top 10 singles in the UK, but he’s a one-hit wonder in America, where “Cars” reached No. 1 in both the U.S. and Canada in 1980.

Numan said he wrote the music in 10 minutes and the lyrics in another 20, calling it “the most productive 30 minutes of my life.” He said the lyrics were inspired after he was the victim of a road rage incident. “It explains how you can feel safe inside a car in the modern world…When you’re in it, your whole mentality is different…It’s like your own little personal empire with four wheels on it.”

Depending on how Trump feels at any given time and how many of his synapses are firing, those little personal empires soon will or won’t be more expensive to obtain.
