Song of the Day 4/25: Starship, “Sara”

A reminder of how far Republican politics has sunk was highlighted earlier this week in New York when Sarah Palin – ‘memba her? – lost her libel case against the New York Times again. The woman who broke the intellectual glass floor on holding important public office set the template for a whole generation of performance artists who followed. Nancy Mace, Lauren Boebert, Marjorie Taylor Greene and their kind make Palin seem capable by comparison, much the way we don’t remember how awful W was because Trump is so much worse.

“Sara” is spelled differently, but it’s vapid enough to apply to Sarah Palin. The band’s second No. 1 hit in 1985, after the widely reviled “We Built This City,” it features Mickey Thomas on lead vocals, with Grace Slick relegated to backup.

The song sounded a lot better a couple of years later when Jamaican singer Frankie Paul gave a dancehall-style makeover.
