Song of the Day 4/30: Counting Crows, “Spaceman in Tulsa”

This song, released in February, hasn’t made El Somnambulo’s list of faves (I’m not sure it qualifies yet by his rules), but it caught my ear the other day when it played on WXPN. I could only hear faint snatches of it from an upstairs bedroom, so it wasn’t clear enough for Adam Duritz’s distinctive voice to register. When it hit the little piano break just before the chorus I wondered if it was something from Bruce Springsteen’s upcoming seven-LP vault dump.

Nope, it’s something new from a band I lost track of years ago. Counting Crows hasn’t released a full album since 2014, but they did a four-song EP in 2021 that’s now been expanded into an LP with five additional songs. This is one of the new ones. “Butter Miracle, The Complete Sweets!” drops May 9.
