Song of the Day 5/29: The Beatles, “You Can’t Do That”

Yet another Trump executive order has been struck down by the courts. This time the Court of International Trade got its licks in, rejecting the flimsy excuse the president used to usurp Congress’ tariff power. It joins an ever-growing list of court defeats for Trump’s clearly illegal ragegasms, and every time he loses someone should play him this Beatles classic from 1964. Written by John Lennon for “A Hard Day’s Night,” it was dropped from the film and relegated to the B-side of “Can’t Buy Me Love.” It charted anyway, at No. 48.

When Harry Nilsson covered it in a slightly slower style for his 1967 debut album, he also quoted more than a dozen other Beatles tunes in his multi-tracked backup vocals, leading some people to call this the first mash-up.

  1. This reminds me–a bunch of the Ardens’ coolest musicians are doing a Beatles’ singalong this Saturday at the Arden Field Theatre (where the Shakespeare plays take place) at 6 pm.

I’ll be taking the lead on ‘Back In The USSR’ and ‘Twist And Shout’.

Your favorite blogger (admit it) may well become your fave Beatles’ interpreter.

I’m donating my services as admission is free.
