I suppose it belongs under ‘G’, but it’s my list.  I do what I want.  Besides, don’t want to make you wait that long:

My wife swears the plot of this song comes from a Dateline episode:

First of two songs this month that XPN discovered for me:

This song deserves a zillion more views:

Forget the micro-dose.  Give me a whole tab:

If I could just come up with one of these every month…:

…“a hungover post-punk echo of (Antônio Carlos) Jobim’s famous ‘Wave’ importing the ennui of a late-capitalist touring musician into the tropicalismo paradise.”:

Letter of the Month?–W!:

The Second Song This Month That XPN Turned Me On To:

Another great month.  Perhaps more roots-oriented than usual, but roots music is usually my default.

In case anybody wonders why the Spotify order of songs is different than the way I’ve ordered them, the Spotify list goes from the first song I liked in a given month to the most recent I heard, whereas I alphabetize the list I post by artist.  No, nobody wondered.  I just like to share.

Think of me in overalls and chewing on a stalk of hay, which is to say I’m digging the country/folk today. The Ryan Davis song is outstanding Americana. The Sterling Drake song is real purty. Bela Fleck great as always. I like the Carolyn Wonderland tune, mainly for the guitar.

In non-roots news, I also enjoyed Marc Ribot’s Brazilian-flavored song; not as much as actual Jobim, but Jobim’s in my songwriting pantheon.

But the Guerrilla Toss song just made me want to dig out my B-52 records, and pretty fast. The Pup video kind of turned my stomach, but maybe that’s the point. The song itself doesn’t improve the experience.

I don’t understand the Alex G video, but I’m pretty sure he’s not a 12-year-old boy or an 18-year-old girl with a very short haircut. Distracts from some decent music.

    • What I liked about the PUP video is that much of the video looked like a REAL Olive Garden commercial. The food prep looked as unappetizing as what the Olive Garden serves up.

These are great! I’d also recommend checking out the identically-titled song, ‘Afterlife’ by Sharon Van Etten.

  3. ‘Konnichi-wawa’ to our friends from Japan, several of whom have clicked on the blog today.

Japanese “city pop” is (was) pretty cool.
