Song of the Day 5/30: Taco, “Puttin’ on the Ritz”
I hear Trump is touchy about being called “TACO,” an acronym for Trump Always Chickens Out, and you don’t have to be Sigmund Freud to figure out he’s touchy because it’s true. So if we’re going to use the expression to mock him, let’s call in the real Taco.
Taco Ockerse is an Indonesian-born Dutch singer based in Germany. He scored an international Top 10 hit with a modernized arrangement of Irving Berlin’s “Puttin’ on the Ritz.” It inexplicably reached No. 4 in the U.S. in 1983, aided by MTV’s reliance on any video it could find in its early days. And he’s still active – he released a new single just last year.
Though it would go over Trump’s head, the song adds another level of mockery, as “putting on the Ritz” referred to a natty dresser, which Trump emphatically is not. Plus it was written by Jewish Irving Berlin about Black clubgoers in Harlem, and we all know how much Trump likes Jews and Blacks. The only problem I can foresee is getting Taco a visa.
Not if Taco helps Trump get Greenland…
