What are you doing today?  Going to a No Kings event?  Watching the parade? Both?  It seems like a momentous day, just hope it’s not too momentous.  Protestations to the contrary notwithstanding, Trump views this as his elevation to the post of Supreme Leader.  Me?  I’m rooting for a deluge and perhaps a well-placed bolt of lightning.

Cooler Heads Don’t Prevail–For Now:

Iran launched multiple waves of fresh missile barrages at Israel early Saturday, while Israel continued airstrikes on Iran, in the most sustained, direct attacks ever between the two regional rivals. Strikes were reported in Rishon LeZion in central Israel and Tel Aviv, while Iranian media reported explosions in eastern Tehran and in the vicinity of Mehrabad International Airport. The strikes, which began on Friday as Israel launched an attack that killed senior Iranian military leaders and nuclear scientists, have thrown planned nuclear talks between the United States and Iran, scheduled for Sunday, into doubt.

Some Immigrants Are More Deportable Than Others:

The Trump administration has abruptly shifted the focus of its mass deportation campaign, telling Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials to largely pause raids and arrests in the agricultural industry, hotels and restaurants, according to an internal email and three U.S. officials with knowledge of the guidance.

The decision suggested that the scale of President Trump’s mass deportation campaign — an issue that is at the heart of his presidency — is hurting industries and constituencies that he does not want to lose.

The new guidance comes after protests in Los Angeles against the Trump administration’s immigration raids, including at farms and businesses. It also came as Mr. Trump made a rare concession this week that his crackdown was hurting American farmers and hospitality businesses.

Anyone know any presidents with business interests in the hospitality industry?  Let me get this straight–immigrants working in those industries are good immigrants,  immigrants working in other professions are bad immigrants.  Got it.

Florida Fascism Flourishes:

Florida officials are under fire after issuing violent threats against demonstrators ahead of Saturday’s “No Kings” nationwide protest, with one sheriff warning protesters that law enforcement “will kill you — graveyard dead.”

The “No Kings National Day of Mobilizations” is set to take place on Saturday, with protests planned across all 50 states, including several in Florida. The protests were organized in opposition to increasing immigration crackdowns and perceived abuses of power, with some aimed at Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) actions in local communities.

At a recent press conference in Brevard County, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier and County Sheriff Wayne Ivey issued dire warnings to demonstrators. Uthmeier promised jail time for those who engage in property damage, while simultaneously encouraging drivers to “just drive” through protesters if they feel threatened.

Sheriff Ivey escalated the rhetoric further, stating that any physical aggression toward law enforcement would be met with immediate violence and potentially fatal force. “We will kill you. Graveyard dead,” he said.

“If you throw a brick, a fire bomb, or point a gun at one of our deputies, we will be notifying your family where to collect your remains at, because we will kill you. Graveyard, dead. We’re not going to play, this has got to stop,” Ivey said.

Florida Sheriff Wayne Ivey, who threatened to kill anti-ICE protesters “graveyard dead,” has a history of corruption, racial profiling and bribery in local campaigns, despite calling himself a “constitutional sheriff.”

Sounds like an incitement to violence to me.  Or, as Talking Points Memo asks, “A Little Too Eager For Riots, Perhaps?”.

Gotta admit, I’m more than a little worried about what might happen today.

Delaware Cops Oppose Limitations On Cooperation With ICE.  Because of course they do:

Marvin Mailey, executive director of the Delaware Association of Chiefs of Police, and Christine Kemp, president of the Delaware Fraternal Order of Police, said their organizations oppose these two bills and others sponsored by Lynn on immigration enforcement.

“We need to have the availability and the flexibility to be able to tend to emergent situations that could happen with our federal partners,” Kemp said. “I can tell you that there have been situations where the arrests that they were making in this community were done much safely by the information sharing and the assisting of our local partners.”

Is this mic on?  That was then.  This is now.  Not surprised that police would neither recognize, not be alarmed by, creeping fascism.

Which brings us back to today’s protests.  If you’re going, please feel free to share what’s going on.  Hey, maybe I can even figure out how to upload photos…

What do you want to talk about?

Israel’s military headquarters was targeted last night. The Kirya is embedded is in heavily populated area in central Tel Aviv. I can’t believe Israel is using citizens as human shields! I guess it’s fine though because they voted for Likud so they’re legitimate targets.

Iran has the right to defend itself. It’s an older civilization than Palestine!

    • Um, Iran hasn’t behaved like a country merely concerned with defending itself.

      • Eric Blair says:

Nonsense. Sorry bro. You’re gong to need to think on that one a bit more. Not even close.

        • Thank you for your cogent and well-reasoned argument.

          • Alby says:

I think you misread the intent of his first comment. These are all the same justifications used frequently by supporters of Israel.

            • Eric Blair says:

              There you go.

But the statement about Iran’s behavior isn’t just poorly researched. It’s incorrect compared to the overt aggression of Israel, the US, NATO, the Five Eyes intel alliance, nations with nukes and overseas military bases, etc..The allegation that Iran has done anything other than the bare minimum for self protection is risible

With all due respect, how can you write one sentence of generalities and accuse me of not making a resourced argument. Honestly don’t get that.

Saw lots of people along Pennsylvania Ave. in Wilmo a little while ago. Going to the rally in Newark this after.

  3. Brett Saddler says:

The PA Ave & Bancroft Parkway “No Kings” event and march had thousands of people. LBR and Matt Meyer gave rousing speeches. The only other elected officials that we saw and got a shout out was Sen. Siegfried, Rep. Burns, and Sen Cruce.

The march has given me HOPE.

  4. Alby says:

Looks like at least 2,000 people here at Old College

    • Mike Dinsmore says:

      Hi, Alby,

We looked for you there. Very impressive turnout, especially considering that a lot of attendees had to pay to park. We found a free place, but it was a bit of a hike. Lots of great signs. Lots of great people!

      • Alby says:

I stood over by the handicapped area, about halfway between the portico and the street, so that I didn’t have to hear the politicians. They I got my steps in.

  5. Joe Connor says:

Did my thing 3.5 miles on the rollator including walking to the start and back from my manse in Trolley.

Observation , crowd was pretty white and I saw lots of folks in my demographic happiest meet up were the great Karen Peterson and several neighbors from my building. John Carney was nowhere in my sight and not a speaker , speakers were LBR, Matt and my man Coby Owens.

I was particularly impressed by Matt’s words, it was before the the horrific news in Minnesota broke, which made for a sad walk back to Trolley.

  6. paul says:

Whatever happened to “no fear or favor” among law enforcement?

  7. nathan arizona says:

Eric Blair – So now the thought of Iran warms your heart? I hate what Netanyahu and his supporters have done to Israel, but that doesn’t make Iran a model nation.

Cheers to yesterday’s marchers. Resistance to Trump can never stop.

    • Eric Blair says:

Where did I say it warms my heart? Weird comment. I said they had the right to defend themselves.

Iran has no military bases outside their borders, have never used a nuclear weapon, have never overthrown a foreign government, do not participate in a world-wide surveillance regime, and haven’t attacked another country in over 300 years.

Does anyone here ever look at media other than Western media? Perspective would really help here.

  8. Eric Blair says:

Oh, in fairness, I do like seeing a bully get their shit kicked it. So, maybe you’re right. Free Palestine.
