Song of the Day 8/20: The White Stripes, “There’s No Home for You Here”
Jack White won’t be getting any Kennedy Center gigs anytime soon, not with his attitude. He posted a photo of Trump with Zelenskyy in the redecorated Oval Office, along with this caption:
Look at how disgusting [sic] trump has transformed the historic White House. It’s now a vulgar, gold leafed and gaudy, professional wrestler’s dressing room. Can’t wait for the UFC match on the front lawn too, he’s almost fully achieved the movie ‘Idiocracy’. Look at his disgusting taste, would you even buy a used car from this conman, let alone give him the nuclear codes? A gold plated trump bible would look perfect up on that mantle with a pair of trump shoes on either side wouldn’t it? What an embarrassment to American history. Also pictured in this photograph, a REAL leader of a nation in a black suit.
That brought forth the usual adolescent invective from Trump grotesque Steven Cheung, who to be fair didn’t previously work for professional wrestling but a more meatheaded sport, Ultimate Fighting Championship. He clearly shares Trump’s tacky taste, though. After dissing White’s “stalled career,” he said the musician didn’t appreciate “the splendor and significance of the Oval Office.”
It’s true White isn’t the cultural force he was two decades ago, when his raw, garage-rock production made his classic-rock power chords sound exciting again. But he’s sold about 10 million more albums and won 12 more Grammy Awards than Cheung’s boss.
The White Stripes reached their pinnacle with their double-platinum 2003 LP “Elephant,” highlighted by the instant classic “Seven Nation Army,” their first single to chart. The Beatlesque “There’s No Room for You Here” was also released as a single, but failed to chart.
