Song of the Day 8/28: Thelma Watson and Her All-Girl Orchestra, “You Gotta Be a Football Hero (To Get Along With the Beautiful Girls)”

If you wonder how a lunkhead (I mean regular guy) like Travis Kelce landed the teen-girl whisperer who became the most powerful woman in the world, you need to hear a song that’s been explaining it for 82 years.

The title says it all: “You Gotta Be a Football Hero (To Get Along With the Beautiful Girls).” As for why so many people besides Swifties are all gushy about this betrothal, I can’t help you there.

Since Tin Pan Alley pro Al Sherman wrote the song in 1933 it’s been one of the most-played football anthems ever, right up there with “We Will Rock You.” Sherman was the father of the Sherman brothers who wrote songs for “Mary Poppins,” “The Jungle Book” and other Disney hits. The song made its first splash in a cartoon about a sailor, Popeye. Popeye was the creation of the main Disney rival at the time, the Fleischer brothers.

This first video is a reminder that Taylor is standing on the shoulders of lady giants, including blonde ones. It features Thelma Watson and Her All-Girl Orchestra, as well as other jazz-age hijinx.

Here’s a clip from the Popeye cartoon. Lanky Olive Oyl looks nothing like Taylor Swift, but then Travis Kelce didn’t ask Olive to marry him.
