Song of the Day 9/22: Jeff Tweedy, “Lou Reed Was My Babysitter”

Filed in Arts and Entertainment by on September 22, 2025

Jeff Tweedy, the singer-songwriter who led Uncle Tupelo and Wilco, is an icon of what 30 years ago was known as Americana – back then, basically folk rock with more emphasis on the rock than the folk. Fans know Tweedy’s early influences included punk bands, but I still wasn’t expecting this homage to Lou Reed he released earlier this month. He’s played the song in concert for several years now, but not with the benefit of full production.

This tune, released by Wilco a couple of months ago, is much more like what I expect from Tweedy these days.

  1. Not the last time you’ll hear this tune–IF you listen to my Fave Tunes Of The Month.

Didn’t know Jeff still had this in him.

Did you see Jeff/Wilco when they played frawley stadium back in the late aughts? Biggest name to grace the riverfront since the party deck burned down.

I was at that Frawley Stadium show. It was a big crowd but I was able to get right next to the stage. Bright Eyes was also on the bill. Great concert experience. Kudos to whoever booked that show.

this isn’t meant as a dunk on promoters at the queen/grand but Wilmington does not get the acts that it used to – i remember Dave Matthews / Pearl Jam / Green Day coming specifically to the kahuna in the 90’s, and they were big then. Looking at the playbill for the queen theater its all a bunch of niche stuff, the biggest act probably being Neko Case in January. What happened?
