Jeff Tweedy, the singer-songwriter who led Uncle Tupelo and Wilco, is an icon of what 30 years ago was known as Americana – back then, basically folk rock with more emphasis on the rock than the folk. Fans know Tweedy’s early influences included punk bands, but I still wasn’t expecting this homage to Lou Reed he released earlier this month. He’s played the song in concert for several years now, but not with the benefit of full production.
This tune, released by Wilco a couple of months ago, is much more like what I expect from Tweedy these days.
