Song of the Day 10/9: Bram Tchaikovsky, “Girl of My Dreams”

Hollywood is up in arms over a new actress who literally came out of nowhere. Tilly Norwood is an AI creation that has real actors worried that they’ll soon be looking for new careers. Variety scoffs at the threat, pointing out that Tilly is the brainchild of a serial provocateur, but that’s unlikely to tamp down what most outlets are describing as “outrage.”

The appeal for producers is clear – a future of movies created without the expense and headaches of dealing with other humans. No temperamental tantrums, no muffed lines, no insurance risks … she’s the girl of their dreams. On the other hand, no casting couch, either, so maybe not of all their dreams.

Bram Tchaikovsky described her way back in 1979, when “Girl of My Dreams” reached No. 37 on the Billboard singles chart. It was the only hit for Tchaikovsky, whose real name is Peter Bramall. He was in a punk band called the Motors before departing to form his eponymous band. Their first LP, “Strange Man, Changed Man,” which included “Girl of My Dreams,” was the most successful, earning them this slot on Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert. After two more albums of decreasing sales the band dissolved and Bramall moved into production.
