Song of the Day 10/21: Dropkick Murphys, “Smash Shit Up”

Filed in Arts and Entertainment by on October 21, 2025

The metaphors for Donald Trump’s destruction of the United States are getting a little too obvious, aren’t they? First he releases a video of himself flying a jet and dumping shit on Americans – quite a stretch of the truth considering there’s no evidence he even knows how to drive a car – and now he’s destroying the White House – not figuratively, literally.

Not the whole thing, at least not yet. But back in July, when it was announced that he would build a massive new ballroom (in violation of laws requiring permits for the work) his press secretary, Kathleen “Machine Gun Lips” Leavitt, said nothing would be done to the existing structure. But yesterday they started tearing down the facade of the East Wing in preparation for construction.

In the thick compendium of Donald Trump’s lies, this one merits little more than a footnote, but it serves as yet another grim reminder of what ought to be the Trump administration’s motto: Promises Made, Promises Broken.

The Dropkick Murphys, the Celtic Punk band from Boston, will probably have something to say about this, given their long-standing loathing of Trump and the MAGA movement. On the other hand, they certainly seemed to have a good time razing a house themselves when they recorded a video for “Smash It Up,” a single from their 2021 LP “Turn Up That Dial.”

The video shows the band demolishing what appears to be a perfectly good house, but the building was slated for destruction anyway. In a phenomenon familiar to people in Rehoboth Beach, an older home was being torn down to clear the lot for a new, more expensive structure.
