Song of the Day 1/20: Thee Sinseers, “What’s His Name”
His name is Jonathan Ross. At the risk of triggering commenter Anon, I’ma go ahead and call him a murderer, even though, as a legal term, “murder” only applies to a killing that has been adjudicated one.
Jonathan Ross is, of course, the trigger-happy ICE agent who iced Renee Good in Minneapolis. His name was widely disseminated soon after the deed was done. Yet when a reporter said it in an interview with Kristi Noem, the Secretary of Lip Fillers freaked out, claiming that the interviewer was doxxing the killer and whinging that ICE agents get death threats. Really? Death threats against the MAGAts? She’s probably too dumb to appreciate the irony.
Thee Sinseers are a Chicano soul band from East Los Angeles led by singer and songwriter Joey Quiñones, who also records solo. He started out playing reggae and ska until he found out that the Jamaicans developed their sound listening to soul music – he cites Smokey Robinson’s “Ooh, Baby Baby” as a particular influence. His tenor isn’t as smooth as Smokey’s, but the vibe is spot on. The band recorded this live at a studio in France in 2019.
