I realize the snow is going to be followed by freezing rain, but there aren’t any songs about freezing rain.
There are many about snow, but they get lumped in with holiday music. “Let It Snow,” “Winter Wonderland,” even “Jingle Bells” have nothing to do with Christmas, but once the decorations are down and the tree has been put through the wood chipper, they’re packed away until next December November October September.
The same thing happens with more contemporary songs. Canadian folksinger Loreena McKennitt’s “Snow” isn’t about the holidays – true to the title, it’s about snow – but it first appeared on her 1987 album “To Drive the Cold Winter Away,” which contained mostly traditional Celtic Christmas music, so that’s how it’s classified. She was raised in Manitoba, so she knows whereof she sings. This video is from a 2012 performance.
