Song of the Day 7/12: Bon Jovi, “Wanted Dead or Alive”

Seems like the devil’s come to collect his due. While everyone puzzles over whether Mitch McConnell is dead or alive – many think Lucifer is biding his time while preparing an especially hot pit for him – the grim reaper snatched Lindsey Graham, fresh off the plane from Ukraine.

That naturally has stoked the fires of conspiracy theory. Could it be not Satan but…Putin? Graham was only 71, just a few years past the Senate’s median age of 64. If I were 92-year-old Chuck Grassley I’d be worried about death coming in threes. On the other hand, he’s not a member of the Senate Ukraine Caucus, so he has nothing to fear from Putin.

“Wanted Dead or Alive” was the third single from Bon Jovi’s 1986 breakthrough album “Slippery When Wet,” and the first to fall short of No. 1; it reached No. 7. Like the two tracks that preceded it, “You Give Love a Bad Name” and “Livin’ on a Prayer,” it became one of the band’s signature songs and remains a classic rock staple.

Jon Bon Jovi acknowledged that he and Richie Sambora wrote the tune in conscious emulation of Bob Seger’s deep cut “Turn the Page,” the minor-key lament of a road-weary musician. It was never released as a single but became a fan favorite, appearing on every concert set list after its release through Seger’s 2019 retirement. It first appeared on his now-rare album “Back in ’72,” which didn’t sell well at the time and has never been re-released in any form because Seger doesn’t like how his voice sounds on it.
