Gun Control: What Works
Three of the 10 deadliest mass shootings in U.S. history have occurred in just the past five months, leading to lots of talk about various gun control measures. Last October, the New York Times ran this infographic to show the public support for various proposals, charted against the popularity of each one. The polling numbers wouldn’t be exactly the same today, but this is recent enough to give people a clear picture of what people would like to see enacted, and what experts say would actually work to minimize mass shootings.
There is a long list of “remedies” that have the support of 70% of the public or more. Considering that veto overrides are set at 66%, The Congress should enact ALL the proposals that are supported by 66% or more of the public at this time, and the polling should be conducted again, post Parkland. When that percentage of the public supports an action, one would hope that the NRA does not carry veto power over the will of 70% or “real” citizens. Kudos to the corporate “consciences” that are acting on their own.
@P “Kudos to the corporate “consciences” that are acting on their own.”
They’re just reading the same polls. It doesn’t take a conscience to protect the bottom line. The companies that do not (e.g. FedEx) may pay a harsh price. I wonder how may people just threw out all their FedEx envelopes?
Just throw them in the bin on top of your neighbor’s smashed Keurig machine.
That’s a blast from the past. Literally.
Are these the same polls that said Hillary would win in a landslide? Asking for a friend.
On a serious note, how come no one is trying to fix the NICS system? NPR reported on its issues years ago. millions of records missing, and 38 states not contributing info. Had that been up to date, Cruz wouldn’t of even gotten a gun.
@Phil “On a serious note, how come no one is trying to fix the NICS system?”
…because the Republicans hate it because FREEDOM, and the Democrats think it’s a joke and that it will never work.
Banning all private ownership of assault rifles is the only measure that makes a lick of sense.
Phone Chris Coons’ office immediately.
“Assault” rifles account for so little when it comes to firearm violence…I will give you the point that it’s scary compared to running in with handguns. Most of these shooters would of been denied firearms had the NICS been accurate.
Anyone else see the video by Warren Farrell that says every mass shooter grew up in a household without a father. It’s pretty interesting. Check out his TED talk about it. I’d put up a link but it would have to be approved. Google: “the boy crisis.”
@P ““Assault” rifles account for so little when it comes to firearm violence…”
I’ll give you that… About 90% of all gun deaths in the US are family and friends, and that’s not done with assault rifles, with suicides and spousal homicide leading the way.
…but baby steps. Let’s do what we can to make our schools safer.
@Phil: Yes, it would be much easier to engineer society than to just give up the battlefield weapons. Exactly what kind of dipshit are you — just covered on the outside, or did it fill up your head too?
Given that assault rifles are such a small part of the market but cause a majority of bad PR for gun owners, any gun owner with something other than shit for brains would come to the obvious conclusion that ASSAULT WEAPONS AREN’T WORTH THE BAD PR! Sorry I had to shout, but I don’t know how thick that shit between your ears is.
