Song Of The Day: March 13, 2018
Nobody does Sondheim like Bernadette Peters. This song is from “Merrily We Roll Along”, initially a flop that featured a great Sondheim score, one of his greatest in fact. The musical has successfully been reworked, and is now produced all over the world. There are several amazing songs in the score, this is but one of them:
OK, now you’re doing it just to torture me. I had to listen to some of the “Hamilton” mix tape just so I’d have a tune or two to hum.
I want a ska, rocksteady, roots reggae week!
True musical torture (for me) would be an Andrew Lloyd Webber Week.
RE: Gotta admit, a little reggae goes a long way with me. Maybe it’s the lack of ganja in my life…
See everyone thinks of reggae as one thing. Not true! You need some old Desmond Dekker in your life.
Separately, ganja compliments all art. 🙂

@El Som: OK, you win that point. I’ll listen to 24 hours of Sondheim before I’ll take 5 minutes of ALW.
I always enjoyed Neil Finn’s comment about him, which is the first verse of “Chocolate Cake” from the Woodface album:
Not everyone in New York would pay to see Andrew Lloyd Webber
May his trousers fall down as he bows to the queen and the crown
I don’t know what tune that the orchestra played
But it went by me sickly and sentimental
Song of the day should be “Bang a Gong” Or “Tea for the Tillersonman”
Broke my own rule and failed to provide a link for “Chocolate Cake.”
Here are the Finn brothers playing it live on David Letterman back in ’91. Check out Paul Shaffer’s organ solo. People forget he has chops:

Actually, I was thinking more along the lines of “Another One Bites The Dust.” Might be especially appropriate since they were from the U.K. and Evangelicals always believed that the song contained backmasking.
Yes! Stanley Beckford tune. Cool. Technically mento genre, but I’ll take what I can get.
“She said she don’t want no young man
Ca young man smoke too much ilee”
🙂
@Dave: If I’d ever heard that rumor I had forgotten it. Here’s the scoop:

@REV: Mento is irie, u zeemi?
But it’s the dreadlock who smoke too much ilee. Young man drink too much white rum.
That Crowded House song rocks.
@jason: There’s a line in the last verse “Kathy Straker, boy could she lose some weight.” Rumor is that it originally was “Oprah Winfrey” but the Finns didn’t want to risk a lawsuit.
Switch-up in the last verse, seen?
No mi nuh seet. Me fast asleep in bed.

another version, with what might be the least hip audience he ever played for. Don’t know what’s up with his eye.

I miss playing backward devil music. The night I spun Revolution # 9 on the White Album backward on my turntable was a watershed moment
turn me on, dead man.
I buried Paul, cranberry sauce — those middle syllables are identical. Coincidence?
That’s it!
