April 12 Open Thread, Late Edition: Delaware Dems Seek Magazine Capacity Limit

Filed in National by on April 12, 2018

Delaware Democrats, led by Rep. Larry Mitchell, announced yesterday that they’ll push for a ban on ammo magazines that hold more than 10 rounds. Gun-hugging Sen. Brian Pettyjohn spoke for the blood-soaked opposition.

The fascists who can’t shoot straight, otherwise known as the GOP, hatched a brilliant plot plan to hobble the James Comey victory book tour which, predictably, has been leaked. These people wouldn’t just fuck up a two-car funeral, they’d lose the body.

Sounds as if Donald Trump has binders full of women with NDAs. Ronan Farrow ferreted out a $30,000 catch-and-kill payment to silence talk of a Trump love illegitimate child.

Republican loyalty is an oxymoron. Now that Paul Ryan has announced he’s leaving Congress, his esteemed colleagues want him to step down immediately as speaker to avoid the knife-fight they expect in the battle to succeed him.

Anyone who remembers high school agrees arming teachers is a terrible idea. For those who don’t, we have living lessons like this pro-gun Parkland teacher who left his loaded gun in a public restroom. Hilarity ensued with the homeless man who found it.

Remember Diaper David Vitter, the Louisiana senator who got re-elected despite patronizing the DC Madame’s services? He’s not back, but his even loonier wife is, as a particularly odious example of the unqualified doofuses (doofi?) Trump is naming to the federal judiciary.

Amanda Marcotte makes an interesting point about the connection between “religious” forced-birth extremists and the sin-seeking men’s right types: Both groups oppose women controlling their own bodies.

On a lighter, hoppier note with hints of citrus, the Daily Beast beer connoisseur says American craft beer is sweeping the beer-drinking world, threatening local brewing customs and customer taste.

hhhmmm first try at the comment didnt work so ill try again since everyone waits to hear what i have to say

the argument i seem to be hearing now for assault rifles and high capacity mags is ” i just want to go to the range and shoot how i want to shoot. i dont hunt or nothing but i like to go to the range to blow off steam.”

so why not have government run and regulated ranges like safe injection sites where you can go and rent an ar-15 and pump through as many rounds as you want. there is no reason for those guns to be anywhere but the military

  2. Alby says:

The new bill does allow high-capacity magazines at gun ranges.

For shooting-sport participants, I don’t understand the problem with leaving the weapon at the range, where it can be locked up safely every time.

    Arthur,
    I’d go a step further.
I don’t see why the government should be running these shooting ranges. They can easily be a private enterprise.
    So, let’s make a deal:
Just ban sale of automatic weapons, boost age for purchase of all rifles and handguns to 21, mandate criminal/mental health background checks and require all buyers to take a gun-safety course.
In return, the NRA can open its own nationwide network of safe-shooting galleries, fully equipped with AR-15s and any other playthings their little hearts desire.

the problem with the range is they are run by gun loving nut jobs. thats not saying a govment worker wont steal one to go shoot up a school. i dont understand the going to the range philosophy. what a waste of money

  5. Alby says:

But it’s a lot less likely than Cletus forgetting to lock the gun safe, or not bothering to buy one in the first place.

  6. Arthur says:

i dont think cletus is the problem. most of the mass shooters either had a good job and money or came from money

  7. Alby says:

I’m not worried about the mass shooters. The reason you’re supposed to lock up guns is so kids can’t get them and thieves can’t steal them so easily. It took a forklift to get my friend’s gun safe into his house, and all he has are hunting rifles and shotguns.

A word about the AR15. There is a marked and critical difference between bullets. While nearly the same diameter and size, the casing for the .223 bullet is much bigger than for a standard 22. This extra size is for the powder, the explosive charge that energizes the bullet. The consequence of all that powder is that .223 bullets go much faster, and that extra energy does terrible things to the human body. It shatter entire bones, goes through more organs and tissues. The bullet tumbles, creating a larger path through the body. Steve Scalise almost died from ONE bullet to his hip.

Guns matter, but bullets matter too, perhaps more than the guns. The Swiss heavily regulate ammo. Perhaps we should take a look.

  9. Jason330 says:

Good. Let’s start by making them reload after killing ten school children.

    Pragmatism!

Every time I see a picture of Brian Pettyjohn I wonder where he left the big red nose and floppy shoes.
