Tom Carper’s pitiful Kavanaugh statement
Avoiding specifics, Senator Tom Carper blew his chance to make a statement, and instead managed to roll out a couple of sentences of vacuous buzzwords and procedural bullshit.
“If Leader McConnell insists on rushing this nominee through before the American people can have their say in November, then Judge Kavanaugh’s judicial philosophy must be thoroughly vetted in the public eye. The Senate must hold Judge Kavanaugh accountable for his deeply concerning record over the past 12 years on the bench,” said Carper in a statement. “In the years that Judge Kavanaugh has served on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, he has revealed his true colors, and his substantial record over that time period has proven to be a profound disappointment. The American people must be given a real opportunity to understand clearly how Judge Kavanaugh views the most important issues of our time. We should do what Leader McConnell so shamefully refused to do for Judge Garland.”
I get the impression that Carper knows the Dems are defeated, so he doesn’t want to invest much in this fight. But would it have really cost his much to use this opportunity to give one or two examples of Kavanaugh’s horrible track record?
“If Leader McConnell insists on rushing this nominee through before the American people can have their say in November, then Judge Kavanaugh’s judicial philosophy must be thoroughly vetted in the public eye. The Senate must hold Judge Kavanaugh accountable for his deeply concerning record of trying break down the wall of separation between Church and state over the past 12 years on the bench,”
The American people must be given a real opportunity to understand clearly how Judge Kavanaugh views women’s right to bodily autonomy?.
How hard was that?
Fucking weak-ass shit, as usual. There is no fight in Tom Carper.
Coons’s statement will be worse.
It’s even weaker than you think. According to Lawrence O’Donnell on the Last Word last night, only four D senators voted to confirm Kavanaugh to his current post.
Only one of them remains in the Senate: Tom Carper. The man who broke the filibuster that put Alito and Roberts on the Supreme Court.
D’s shouldn’t even HAVE to worry about what a D senator will do with this nomination.
If this isn’t a reason to vote him out of office, then there isn’t a reason.
If I’m Kerri Harris, I am out there today with a strong statement that she would oppose this nomination, and I’m pointing out that Carper was one of only 4 D’s, and the only one remaining in the Senate, to vote for Kavanaugh for his original post.
Jee-zus, is it really that difficult? Up your game.
Pray tell what did you expect the Delaware DINO? As noted Coons will be even worse. In the words of Jimmy Durante “I’m disgustipated”. But not surprised.
Carper isn’t very worried about a facsist government taking over because he is on the inside of it. Trump’s vision for America is only slightly different from Carper’s.

Brett Kavanaugh’s record shows that he will put corporations over people. His nomination to the #SupremeCourt threatens the rights of workers, women, and the most vulnerable among us. Every Senate Democrat should vote no.

Much better statement. Three short sentences. Very clear.
“Brett Kavanaugh’s record shows that he will put corporations over people.”
Well said. And leaves no doubt as to why Carper is being viewed as wobbly.
I understand Harris’s overall strategy of not mentioning Carper by name. But in this case I think it would be in order for her to very publicly call on Carper to vote against Kavanaugh, and to thank him if he does.
Just saw a snippet on Morning Joe — sometime around 8:10 AM — in which the hosts and guests stated that Judge Kavanaugh was about the most qualified and ‘mainstream’ of anyone President Trump would have selected. Sounds like MSNBC has concluded that this nomination can’t be stopped, and they’re just keeping their powder dry.
It was noted that Judge Kavanaugh’s article suggesting Congress pass a law shielding a sitting President from criminal charges or civil suits was published in 2009, at the start of Barack Obama’s term, so it was hardly self-serving for a conservative.
Mr Kavanaugh had worked for Ken Starr in the impeachment investigation, and saw, first hand, how distracted President Clinton had become due to the Paula Jones lawsuit. (That last is mine; it was not mentioned on Morning Joe.)
Given Carper’s prior vote for Kavanaugh and his mushy statement, it’s imperative that both Murkowski and Collins flip. If only one does, Carper will cancel her out.
If the three D senators from red states flip, Carper will go with them.
Fuck Morning Joe. There is plenty of wingnut conservatism in Kavanaugh’s record.
First – Murkowski and Collins are not going to flip. Let’s dispense with that nonsense right now.
Second – Carper is betting on Manchin flipping so he can hide his no vote behind his fellow West Virginian’s yes.
That is pretty obvious.
This fight isn’t to prevent Kavanugh from getting to the court. That is a done deal. This fight is about what Democrats really stand for.
With Demos like Carper leading, though, I guess we kind of know the answer to that already.
This guy gets it.

Carper is rooting for Manchin and Heitkamp to flip to give him cover for a No vote.
Carper will speak on anything that doesn’t go against his corporate contributors
“It was noted that Judge Kavanaugh’s article suggesting Congress pass a law shielding a sitting President from criminal charges or civil suits was published in 2009, at the start of Barack Obama’s term, so it was hardly self-serving for a conservative.”
I heard that on Morning Joe and it’s totally irrelevant when Kavanaugh said it. It’s irrelevant to assessing Donald Trump’s motive for selecting him and it’s irrelevant to assessing his judicial philosophy. It’s THAT Kavanaugh thinks the president should be above the law while in office that is very troubling. That gives the President carte blanche to behave as he wants while in office and, in principle, would give the President a free hand to act in ways that are treasonous and perniciously effecting the outcomes of future elections.
Carper announces that he will vote no. Why? Kerri Harris.

His stated reason? Carper is disappointed with Kavanaugh’s record on the Court. Something that was apparent to all but four D senators back when Kavanaugh was first approved with a yes from Carper.
Driving hard to the left. He’s on the run! Crowley tried this. He’s speaking to people who will vote for Harris. Watch. It’s happening.
Just remember, folks, if you like this type of thing you can have it all day every day.
Kerri Evelyn Harris for Senate.
